I get asked a lot, "How did you end up in Hawaii?" Then the conversation goes like this.
Me, "We sold everything we owned and we moved here!"
Other person, "Wow, I could never do that! But I sure would like to!"
"Why?"
"Why what?"
"Why couldn't you do that?"
Puzzled, "Because I have a mortgage, a job, family, etc, etc, etc..."
Hmmmm...well I guess you can always come up with a hundred excuses why not to do something, in fact, people think of excuses all the time! Why they can't move, change jobs, travel or just relax. I swear people's motto is "I can't because..." Let's be honest you only make excuses to justify staying where your at or in a situation that you hate. You do it so that you can feel better about not going after your dream. You do it because if you don't everyone around you will tell you what a bad idea it is!!!! That's right, they will, and they did it to us too! If you are wondering, here is how we did it.
We decided that we needed to make a change. We had 2 houses, one with seven acres and a construction company. The economy started to get worse and my husband began to have heart pains. Heart attacks happen when you are living a life that you don't enjoy or you are stressed out all the time. It is quite common. So my husband asked how about Hawaii? We booked him a ticket and he left a week later to see if we should move there. He made an appointment with a Realtor and looked at housing and neighborhoods. He also checked out the job situation and talked with the local people he met. He came home and said let's move!
We started filtering through all of our things and had an auction, it was amazing to me how little you get for material items after paying so much for them in the first place, that's when my whole view on material things changed! We also had soooo much stuff! Things we never used or forgot about. We put both houses on the market and got the kids stuff in order for a new school, shot records, etc.
Then we told family and friends! Oh jeez, they thought we had lost it! It's way too expensive there, what about jobs, what about us????? Everyone was convinced that groceries were higher, gas was higher, housing was higher and they had state income tax! I was surprised at the things they thought of, I was surprised at the fear! But we went anyway and we were gone within two months. We had no furniture, no jobs, but we where in Hawaii!
Within three months we found jobs, we found furniture and we made more money then before. Housing is higher, gas is higher, food is about the same but clothes and car insurance is way cheaper. The pay is higher and health insurance are required by law. All and all we are financially better off and my husbands cholesterol went from 300 to under 200!
There is a down side you are a 6 hour plane ride away from the mainland, no more road trips! Family is far away, so it is expensive to fly back. In fact moving to Hawaii definitely isn't for everyone, it takes some serious adjustment.
These experiences make you spiritually rich. Follow your heart...follow your dream, it is possible! I have met many people in Hawaii that got here the same way we did, and they have never regretted it. Some still live here, some have moved on. You never hear older people say, I wish I would have accumulated more stuff! They do however wish that they would have experienced more things in life....
